The Altopiano trail

Final evening: DINING PIEDS DANS L’EAU

EATING ON A TRABOCCHI

The finish line is set at the Trabocchi Coast, in the area between Marina di San Vito Chietino and Rocca San Giovanni, both Blue Flag beaches. Along this stretch of coastline are a series of coves and inlets carved between cliffs and rocky crags.

Your final night’s dining experience will be a unique one. Back in the 17th century, trabacchi were wooden fishing installations built to replace fishing boats along the coast of Abruzzo. Nowadays they are the most delectable seafood restaurants in the whole of Italy. The Italian poet Gabriele D’Annunzio, who was born along this coast, described the trabocchi as giant spiders of the sea. Many tourists, especially those in a hurry, barely notice these strange structures. Others travel from far away just to eat at one. Tell any Italian that you plan to have some frutti di mare on a trabocco, and you are guaranteed to get many wide smiles.
